Timepieces
In 1872 Bonaventura Eijsbouts from Asten laid the foundation for what is now Koninklijke Eijsbouts. Originally trained as a watchmaker, he started a “tower clock factory” in a small workshop behind his house because of his keen interest in clocks and timepieces. Thanks to the high quality and accuracy of his timepieces, orders followed each other in quick succession, as a result of which the workshop soon became too small and in 1905 had to make way for a new building on the site where the company is currently located.

Clocks
Under the leadership of Bonaventura's son Johan, who entered the company in 1893 at the age of 15 and who manifested himself more than his father as a merchant, Eijsbouts' product range was expanded to include striking and loud clocks with accompanying equipment. Eijsbouts did not pour himself at that time. The clocks were bought from renowned foundries abroad. From that moment on, Eijsbouts not only supplied and installed tower clocks, but also sounding tower clocks.

Restoration
Restoration includes all other activities, including: repairs to the clocks themselves, such as welding cracks and the repair of crowns and tuning corrections; replacement of modern suspension structures and loudspeakers with classic structures; the replacement of loudspeakers and work on keyboards, playing mechanisms and playing drums of carillons.

It should be borne in mind that bells, bells and all historical carillons have sometimes been restored or changed more than once. In most cases, and in particular with the carillons, the original construction was changed to a great extent. In almost all cases the keyboard was replaced by a keyboard based on a contemporary standard. The arrangement of clocks in windows was replaced by a bell-seat arrangement in the tower and the classic trouser system with the network of pull wires was replaced by a tumbler system with rotating shafts and squares.

Restorations that are now being carried out will therefore always have to be based on a choice to maintain the grown condition or to restore an earlier situation. Maintaining the existing condition prevents traces of an older condition from being erased. When choosing to return to an original situation, optimum justice is done to the intentions of the maker. Especially with a musical instrument, not only the sound is important, but the way in which the sound is created also plays a major role.

In that respect, the different traction systems and arrangements of the clocks in the tower are fundamentally different. Coming up with a new concept should be regarded as not in accordance with the latest insights in the field of monument conservation.
